In The World As I See It... William Balfour Stays In Jail and Joe The Plumber Goes Away

Now that the presidential election is over and done with, I've got a few things that I'd like to get off my chest. In particular; William Balfour, and Joe The Plumber, and political advertising

In the world as I see it, these issues have taken up way too much media time over the past few weeks. They've become my greatest pet peeves, and if anyone is listening, then maybe we can correct a few things before next election or high profile disaster.

Here is a guy who gained worldwide celebrity for doing nothing more than being a convicted felon who just happened to married to Jennifer Hudson's sister, Julia. Now, he's being implicated in the brutal murders of talented Ms. Hudson's mother, brother, and nephew, and people are clinging to him as if he's a superstar.

His mother has been on several nationally televised news programs to tell anyone who's willing to believe her that William Balfour is innocent. And now, past and present girlfriends are crawling out of the woodworks to express everything from "I can't believe he'd do such a thing", to "He confessed to me that he was involved in the mother and brother's deaths, but not the death of the child".

To top things off, the Illinois Departmant of Corrections had to have a parole hearing to determine Balfour's parole status as a violator, even after he was caught with crack cocaine earlier this past summer.

I'm all for the legal "due process", but William Balfour admitted to police that he was in the home on the morning of the murders. Give this guy his day in court, but let's not waste any more precious media time turning this guy into a martyr.

Has anybody even seen this guy since the election? Samuel Wurzelbacher, better known as "Joe The Plumber" gained celebrity and national media attention after the last debate between Barack Obama and John McCain.

His claim to fame was in asking Sen. Obama a ridiculous question about his proposed tax cuts while the presidential candidate was campaigning in Ohio. His question insinuated that he would be effected by an increased tax burden for earning over $250,000 yearly.

In reality, this guy earns no where close to that amount, and still owes the state of Ohio for taxes on income earned under the Bush administration. Why didn't he pose the question to his state legislature? And... He's not even a licensed plumber!

To make matters worse, the guy barnstormed around the country with the republican candidates as if he was the symbol of the average American. He even felt obliged to comment on the state of foreign affairs, an issue on which he said Barrac Obama was unqualified.

Well, I've got news for you, Joe. The average American pays his or her taxes, regardless of who's in office and despite whether they supported them or not. Maybe this was all just an opportunity for some media coverage to get his country music career rolling. He did hire a public relations firm after all.

Who in America din't let out a sigh of relief when they woke up on Nov. 5th and was not bombarded with a barrage political ads? I'm sure even the candidates were happy not to see them anymore.

Believe me, I understand the necessity of reaching as many people as possible during a political campaign. But, how many people make up their minds on a candidate by a 60 second commercial spot?

As I see it, the biggest problem this year was not only the number of ads being run, but also in the number of negative ads.

I would personally rather hear a candidate give me reasons to vote for him or her, than to tell me why I shouldn't vote for their opponent. I guess I subscribe to the school of thought that when someone spends too much time tattling on someone else, then they themselves are hiding something.

My suggestion here would be to spend less time talking about your opponent in your political advertising, and more time convincing me why I should vote for you. Also, spend a little less money advertising on the Saturday morning cartoons. Few of the viewers of those programs fall into voting demographics.

Barack Obama's Grandmother Dies One Day Before Presidential Election

Barack Obama grieves the death of his grandmother

Madelyn Payne Dunham, the grandmother of presidential hopeful, Sen. Barack Obama, died today at her home in Hawaii after a long battle with cancer. She was 86 years old.

Sen. Obama learned of his grandmother's death while campaigning in Jacksonville, Florida, but did not make a formal announcement until later on the campaign trail at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. Madelyn Dunham died just one day before the presidential elections, in which her grandson has a good chance of being elected the first African American president in U.S history.

I just wanted to take a moment to express my most sincere condolences to Sen. Barack Obama and his family during their time of grief. May God be with you during your time of sorrow.

Obama's Convention Speech Attracts Celebrity Heavy Hitters

The 2008 Democratic National Convention came to a close in Denver, but based the number of the entertainment industry’s heavy hitters present, it could go down as the Woodstock of politics. It’s the biggest congregation of celebrities since the Academy Awards, but none shined brighter than the star of the show, Democratic Presidential Candidate, Barack Obama.

Obama gave his acceptance speech to more than 84,000 supporters crammed into Denver’s INVESCO Field, home of the NFL’s Denver Broncos, as millions more watched at home. His presence overshadowed such big name celebrities as Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Jennifer Lopez, Jamie Foxx, and Jessica Alba.

Ben Affleck made an appearance at the city’s food bank for America’s Second Harvest, and read from a Howard Zinn at the Starz Green Room, as his wife, Jennifer Garner looked on. Stevie Wonder performed at the stadium, as did singer John Legend, and wil.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas. Other performers included Sheryl Crow and Michael McDonald.

Others in attendance included Forrest Whitaker, Kanye West, Ashley Judd, Spike Lee, and Annette Benning.

Michelle Obama Addresses Democratic National Convention

Michelle Obama, wife of democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, was the keynote speaker on the opening night of the Democratic National Convention. In her speech, she spoke of her history with the presidential candidate, and stressed the inportance of family and party unity.

She credited former candidates Hillary Clinton and Obama's vice presidential selection, Sen Joe Biden as being inspriations, in what sounded like an attempt at party unification. Barack Obama watched from the home of a Kansas City, MO family, and addressed his wife and daughters on a large screen after the speech.

Obama Speaks Of Tearing Down New Walls

Barack Obama, visiting Germany during the first leg of his European visit, looked and sounded presidential while speaking to a crowd waving signs and cheering for the democratic nominee. His reception in Germany was like that of a rock star, and his speech to more than 200,00 in Berlin spoke of tearing down new walls, and building greater international relationships.

John McCain may regret challenging his democratic opponent to travel abroad. The Arizona senator commented repeatedly that Obama lacked the foreign policy experience to to forge relationships overseas. But so far, the European community has welcomed Obama with open arms. One reason is because many see McCain's international agenda and the same as that of President Bush.

Rev. Jessee Jackson Steps Way Out Of Bounds

Note: This is a post written for another blog that I write, but I felt that there was great enough relevance to post it here also.

There’s been a ton of buzz this week about remarks the Rev. Jesse Jackson made in referrence to Sen. Barack Obama during the break in a Fox News Sunday interview. There has been almost as much chatter about what was actually said, as there has been about the fact that the good reverend whispered what may become infamous words, “I want to cut his nuts off.”

I almost stayed away from this issue, because initially, I wasn’t sure if this story qualified more as polital news, or if I could squeeze it into the broad catagory of celebrity/entertainment dish.

Well, I’m bringing it up here for a number of reasons…

1. Both Jesse Jackson and Barack Obama are as much a part of pop culture, as they are political icons. Both are gifted orators who draw large crowds at personal appearances, even though demographic attendance at those appearances differ greatly. And…

2. Jesse Jackson’s political relevance, once assured, has waned over the past few years, to more of a mouthpiece for social consciousness. The problem is that now, after a few social missteps of his own (an aldulturous affair when led to his fathering a child out of wedlock, and his now infamous remarks about Obama), even his social relevance is coming into question.

As the person who carried the hopes of the African American community on his broad shoulders after the death Of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jackson rallied a nation to take notice of unequeal justices, and the plight of Black America. But he has shown that he is not infallible. And thought the people he championed stuck by his side during his very public baby mama situation, they may not be so forgiving of his attacking another black public servant attempting to carry the flame of hope.

Sen. Obama accepted a public apology form Jack on Monday, but the damage was already done. Not that is has hurt Obama in the polls, because he actually gained 2 percentage points, but it does suggest a division between younger and older blacks.

If Rev. Jackson is sincere in his efforts to rally the African American vote, it seems that he could better serve the cause by being a little more discrete about his personal differences with Obama, or just plain keep his mouth shut.

Barack Obama: Is America Really Ready For A Black President?

This is something that was originally posted on this blog In February, but it seems more relevant now than ever.

As the greatest industrialized democracy in the world, America has overcome the mistakes and difficulties associated with growing as a young nation. This country has come through a united struggle for independence, the pains of civil war, two world wars and the unrest experienced as a nation divided on domestic issues such as civil rights. At this point, the question should not be whether or not America is ready for a Black president, but whether any individual seeking the office of president is ready to assume the enormous responsibilities facing them in America.

Bush Thanks Troop For Making "Ultimate Sacrifice"...
But still threatens to veto extended veterans benefits package!

President Bush spoke before a group of veterans and their families at Arlington Memorial Cemetery on Memorial Day, praising the ultimate sacrifice made by American service members both past and present. "On this Memorial Day, I stand before you as the commander in chief and try to tell you how proud I am," he said. But, what about his commitment to them after returning to civilian life? Why We Should Think Before Speaking

We have all experienced that momentary blunder. Words spew from our mouths as if having a mind of their own, and before realizing what is being said, they have already had an impact. Those words may have expressed exactly how we felt or thought subconsciously, but should have been spoken in a manner which reflected much more thought.

Is America Ready For a Black President?

Blacks have been involved in the process of political leadership since before reconstruction. Vernon Jordon was a close confidant of President Clinton. Condolezza Rice and Colin Powell have both served as Secretary of State, and many other Blacks have held high political posts both in state and national government. Leadership abilities were not heaped on just one ethnic group or gender. We should not be so focused on the character that fills the seat of the white house, but rather, the character of the man.
